Math in the Wild: Taking Numbers Outside
What happens when we take math beyond the classroom walls? Inspired by the work of Juliet Robertson, Gillian Judson, and Rachel Tidd, this session shows how students can use natural objects to explore mathematical concepts. You'll learn how to assess student understanding through observation, conversation, and hands-on demonstrations. Session Objectives: 1. Identify and select specific natural objects and outdoor settings that can be effectively used to explore and teach mathematical concepts 2. Apply non-traditional assessment methods (observation, conversation, and demonstration) for assessing mathematical understanding outdoors. 3. Explore practical, outdoor math activities, inspired by the named authors, that effectively takes instruction beyond the classroom.
