Exploring Disciplinary Literacies Using Artifact Analysis: Igniting Curiosity in the Classroom

Artifact analysis is a versatile strategy to engage students in grades 4-12. Rather than looking at photographs or watching videos, or simply reading about artifacts, artifact analysis stimulates students' interest through tactile exploration and discussion of historical items or close facsimiles. These connections not only engage students in the moment of the lesson but also provide opportunities for peer collaboration and a beginners’ understanding of the contextualization of learning in the sciences and history. In the elementary and early adolescent classroom, these investigations provide opportunities for students to authentically connect disciplinary vocabulary and begin developing their skills in scientific and historical analysis (Sawchuk, 2024). This session introduces teachers to the why and how of artifact analysis and leads teachers through an analysis workshop.
