Letterforms: Designing Original Font Using Pattern and Color Inspired by Contemporary Native American Art

Saturday 7 March 2026·8:00 pm

Explore the art of Jeffrey Gibson, the first Indigenous solo artist to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale. Gibson draws on various Native American art forms as well as popular culture, music, and historical texts to create with a decidedly contemporary vision. His work often includes text “hidden” in plain sight in the midst of dazzling patterns. Participants will examine Gibson’s artworks, explore the way he expresses personal meaning, and create their own piece of cut-paper art incorporating text, colors, and shapes that have a meaning for them. This activity is adaptable to multiple grade bands.
