Beyond the Red Pen: Providing Feedback in High School ELA

Part of NCTCA 2026
Friday 6 February 2026·4:00 pm

Feedback is often the most powerful tool in the English classroom—and the most exhausting. It’s also the part of writing instruction that is easiest to shortcut, especially with the multitude of demands placed on English Teachers. This session focuses on feedback as a core part of how students learn—not just how they’re assessed. The strategies shared are meant to be manageable and purposeful. The emphasis is on helping students think more critically about their writing while it’s happening—developing awareness of their choices, not just responding to corrections. Sample comments, prompts, and models will be included. Nothing flashy. Just useful.
