From Recruitment to Retention: Hiring, Maintaining, and Empowering Teachers and Staff of Colour

This session will be led by four educators of colour from Black Gold School Division. Together, we will explore the ways hiring practices can unintentionally exclude diverse candidates, and we will share practical strategies for creating more inclusive and equitable recruitment processes. We’ll also highlight the unique challenges that employees of colour may face in the workplace and offer actionable examples of how to support, empower, and cultivate diverse leadership within schools and districts. This session is particularly relevant for administrators, who play a key role in hiring, but it is equally important for all educators. Creating a genuine sense of belonging for teachers of colour requires the collective commitment of the entire school community.
