Beyond the Search Bar: Cultivating Research Skills and Critical Thinking with Google NotebookLM

Part of NCTIES 2026
Thursday 5 March 2026·8:15 pm

The proposal for this presentation highlights how NotebookLM can serve as a powerful AI-powered research assistant for students, directly addressing current educational goals. Unlike a traditional chatbot that pulls information from the internet, NotebookLM uses only the sources that a student uploads, which could include PDFs, Google Docs, lecture notes, or even YouTube video transcripts. This "grounded" approach is a game-changer for academic work, as it forces students to start with credible sources they have vetted. We'll cover how to use NotebookLM to:Synthesize information for research papers: Students can upload multiple sources for a project and ask NotebookLM to summarize key themes, identify connections between different documents, or even generate a briefing document. This helps them move beyond simple fact-finding to synthesizing complex ideas from various sources.Improve reading comprehension and critical analysis: Teachers can have students upload a difficult text and use NotebookLM to generate a Study Guide with key terms, a quiz with an answer key, or a set of essay questions. Students can also ask the tool to explain complex concepts in simpler terms, providing them with a personalized tutor.Foster information and media literacy: We will show how NotebookLM can be a tool for teaching students to be critical consumers of AI-generated content. By using the built-in citations to verify every piece of information, students can learn to identify and correct inaccuracies, which is an essential skill in an age of misinformation.Prepare for exams and presentations: The session will demonstrate how to generate Audio Overviews, which create a podcast-style summary of uploaded documents. This allows students to review material while on the go. Teachers can also use this feature to create supplementary materials for students who prefer auditory learning. This session will provide educators with actionable strategies and a clear framework for introducing NotebookLM responsibly, focusing on ethical use and the development of higher-order thinking skills.
