From Students to Technology Specialists: Insights from the Granville County Schools STAR Internship Program

This session outlines a successful Technology Internship/Apprentice Program, an innovative model for cultivating future-ready talent and providing essential district support through student engagement. Designed for School and District Administrators, this presentation will demonstrate how the Granville County SchoolSTAR program offers a practical, impactful, and sustainable framework for integrating high school students into critical operational roles, ultimately benefiting both the students and the district.The program evolved from team-based roles in its initial years to a structure of individual pre-apprenticeship roles by the 2024-25 school year. This adaptability demonstrates a flexible model for district needs. It formally transitioned into an Apprenticeship Program in Spring 2025, providing clear career pathways. Students gain invaluable experience across various district functions, including: ◦ Device Repair and Support: Providing crucial technical assistance. ◦ Digital Resources Instructional Support: Aiding instructional technology facilitators. ◦ Marketing and Promotional Resources: Supporting the district's web and social media presence. ◦ Cyber Security and Network Support: Addressing critical IT infrastructure needs. ◦ Artificial Intelligence (AI) Training Resources Development: Collaborating with the district's AI Task Force. ◦ Digital Media Production: Creating podcasting and video content for the entire district. ◦ Website and Social Media Management: Enhancing district communications.The program includes a strong mentorship model. Each student position is supported by experienced GCPS staff, such as Technology Support Specialists, Instructional Technology Facilitators, the Webmaster, Marketing Specialists, and the Technology Director. This ensures high-quality guidance and professional development. The program consistently integrates returning students while bringing in new talent, demonstrating its value and student retention. A major success is the direct pipeline to full-time employment: The program has hired two 2023-24 Device Repair and Support Team members as full - time GCPS Technology Support Specialist Apprentices, showcasing a clear career progression within the district.Students have been promoted to Super STAR Team Leads and assumed significant district-wide responsibilities, such as managing all podcasting and video production content or providing dedicated tech support to specific schools.This presentation will delve into the operational details, funding strategies, and the tangible benefits of establishing a similar program, empowering administrators to consider implementing a robust and beneficial internship model in their own districts.
