Reggae in the Room: Empowering Student Voices, a Black History Speech and Poetry Competition

Reggae represents change, conviction, activism, and the voice of reason. It has had an international impact that has communicated a powerful source of inspiration. Similarly, music throughout Black History has also been a source of empowerment. The session will showcase how technology was used to organize, promote, and deliver a successful student competition that celebrated the legacy, struggles, and triumphs of Black history through spoken word and performance. Attendees will gain insights into planning logistics, digital tools (e.g. video creation/editing, posters), and student engagement strategies (live museum presentations, time travel response). We will include examples of student performances, feedback from participants and a program outline and guide. Whether you're an educator, organizer, or community leader, this session will equip you with a replicable model for combining cultural education with 21st-century skills.This presentation engages youth, amplifies underrepresented voices, and fosters cultural literacy. Through the collaboration with our community, this event has become more accessible, inclusive, and impactful.
