Wingspan: Building Student Voice Through School News
Launching a school news program doesn’t just build technical skills—it gives students a voice. Wingspan, Central Carolina Academy’s student-led broadcast, began as a classroom project and has grown into a weekly production that informs, entertains, and unites the school community. In this session, you’ll learn how to transform your classroom into a newsroom where students take ownership of roles such as anchors, reporters, editors, and producers. We’ll walk through the nuts and bolts: planning a show flow, training students for on-camera and behind-the-scenes roles, managing equipment, and editing for a professional final product. More importantly, you’ll see how a broadcast program can foster collaboration, accountability, and confidence in students of all ability levels.Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to strengthen an existing program, you’ll leave with practical tools, templates, and inspiration to help your students soar.
