Elementary Composition: Unleashing Creativity with Rhythm and Body Percussion - Part 1

This session presents practical, low-barrier strategies for integrating composition into the elementary music classroom using only the fundamentals of rhythm and body percussion. We will explore how simple rhythmic concepts (quarter notes, eighth notes, rests) can be translated into engaging kinesthetic movements—clapping, snapping, patting, and stomping—to create original musical phrases. Participants will first learn a scaffolded approach to teaching rhythmic notation and transforming these rhythms into multi-layered body percussion pieces. This composed work will then be immediately transferred and performed using classroom unpitched rhythm instruments (shakers, tambourines, rhythm sticks, etc.). Attendees will leave with a complete, replicable lesson plan focusing on collaborative composition, creative problem-solving, and cross-curricular connections, demonstrating how the human body and accessible instruments can serve as exciting tools for young composers. This workshop emphasizes accessibility, making it highly adaptable for diverse teaching environments.
