A Case Study on the Role of Storytelling in Social-Emotional Learning: Insights from a Nigerian Early Childhood Classroom

This session highlights how culturally rooted storytelling can serve as a powerful, developmentally appropriate strategy for fostering social-emotional learning (SEL) in early childhood settings. Using The Healer’s Drum, an original storybook inspired by African oral traditions and proverbs, the session demonstrates how narratives of cooperation, empathy, and peace can help children build SEL competencies such as self-regulation, respect, and community awareness. Participants will experience a live storytelling demonstration that incorporates rhythm, repetition, and call-and-response techniques reflective of traditional African storytelling practices.
