Coach Up Coach Down: Building Stronger HPE Programs Through Mutual Understanding
Health and physical education programs thrive when teachers and supervisors truly understand each other’s perspectives -- but too often, communication gaps and differing professional backgrounds get in the way. This interactive session brings together two key groups: 1) administrators or supervisors who oversee PE departments without a formal HPE background; and 2) HPE teachers seeking to collaborate effectively with their supervisors. Participants will explore strategies to “coach up” (equipping supervisors with the knowledge and context they need to champion HPE programs) and “coach down” (empowering HPE teachers to communicate goals, needs, and impact in ways that resonate with leadership priorities). Through real-world scenarios, role-play, and collaborative problem-solving, attendees will leave with practical tools for building trust, aligning expectations, and strategies to advocate for high-quality PE and health education. Whether you’re leading a department or teaching in one, you’ll gain insights to strengthen relationships and elevate your program.
