Supporting Elementary Teachers with GSD-inclusive Practices

Many elementary teachers want to support gender and sexual diversity (GSD) in their classrooms but struggle with low self-efficacy—uncertainty about what to do, how to do it, and how to respond to differing perspectives. Grounded in research on equity-focused self-reflection, best practices in inclusive pedagogy, and strategies for creating social change, this session introduces a practical framework for building clarity, curiosity, courage, and compassion in GSD-inclusive practice. Together we will examine common barriers, recent legislative changes in Alberta, and everyday strategies for navigating family conversations and school contexts. Participants will leave with concrete tools, reflection activities, and resources to strengthen their confidence in creating safe, welcoming, and affirming learning environments for all students.
