Concept development and avoiding misconceptions, in post 16 physics

Teaching post 16 physics can be a challenging prospect. There is little enough time to plan and teach content let alone consider the best approaches to maximise learning. This session will explore common misconceptions in post 16 physics with simple demonstrations and explanations to help guide students thinking towards the correct concept development. The session is based around the misconceptions and concept blockers that can bedevil post 16 physics teaching. It will draw on 30 years of personal experience in the classroom and 7 years as an Institute of Physics support coach writing and delivering our online post 16 CPD programme. Participants will see a fast-paced session with key demonstrations / software / simulations / and paper exercises aimed at concept development rather than practical skills. They will leave with several classroom ideas ready to put into practice. The session is not interactive as such, but participants will be encouraged to ask questions and exchange ideas as the session progresses.
