Enhancing Mentorship through Reflective Practice: Strategies and Tools to Support Novice Teachers

This presentation will explore best practices in mentoring pre-service and novice teachers, including introducing a reflective tool to support principled mentorship. Practical field experiences during pre-service teacher education are very impactful for educators’ induction into the profession. As members of the supervision triad, teacher associates and university supervisors have a significant influence on the professional learning that takes place during practicums. Nonetheless, limited support is often provided on how to engage in effective mentorship. This presentation will provide a summary of key findings from the mentorship literature and introduce a reflective tool to support educators in mentoring novice teachers. The presentation will be of interest to administrators and teachers involved in teacher education.
