Writing in French Immersion Made Simple

Teaching writing in early French Immersion can feel overwhelming. How much support is enough? When do we increase expectations? What does strong writing actually look like in Grades 1–3? In this session, I will share the classroom tools, strategies, and routines I use to support writing development in lower elementary French Immersion. I will show you examples of progression of writing across the year, including how expectations shift as students grow in confidence, independence, and language proficiency. I will walk through how writing begins with highly teacher-guided experiences, such as shared and modeled stories, and gradually moves toward more independent student writing. This session will focus on practical, realistic approaches that help get students writing early and often, while intentionally building writing competencies over time. Real classroom examples will be shared to illustrate how tools are introduced, used, and adapted throughout the year. There will also be opportunities for discussion and collaboration, allowing participants to share what works in their own classrooms and to reflect on how these strategies can be adapted to their students’ needs. This session is designed for French Immersion teachers in Grades 1–3 who are looking for concrete ideas, clear progression, and confidence in teaching writing in the early years.
