Build a Better Backpack: Designing Outdoor Learning that Charts a Course for Change

Outdoor programs can spark transformation—but only when they’re designed with clarity, intention, and coherence. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore how strong learning design acts as a compass for meaningful environmental education, helping us chart a course for change in learners and communities. Using the metaphor of four different backpacks, participants will move through short experiential activities that highlight how program design “packs” can become cluttered, misaligned, or too heavy to carry. Together, we will unpack curriculum challenges, reflect on what creates drag or momentum, and explore key concepts from experiential learning theory, learning science, and instructional design. Participants will then “repack” one of their own programs using a simple, flexible planning tool. Throughout, they will experiment with qualitative and quantitative assessment techniques—presented as “gear”—to match different ages, settings, and intended outcomes.
