Facing the Tough Stuff: Rethinking Discussion, Power, and Voice in ELA Classrooms

Saturday 25 April 2026·3:15 pm

Navigating classroom discussions in ELA has become increasingly important within today’s societal context. This session explores how to facilitate difficult conversations by using research-based perspectives alongside practical classroom experience. Thoughtful planning using literature, curricular outcomes, and purposeful discussion questions is essential. But how do we also address power dynamics, teacher neutrality, and broader societal influences within these conversations? Participants will be introduced to specific, practical strategies for guiding meaningful discussions in middle-years and secondary classrooms, while also engaging in collaborative dialogue with fellow educators. Educators will leave with concrete strategies, fresh perspectives, and a stronger research-based understanding of how critical thinking and classroom discussion are deeply interconnected.
