Homegrown Resources: How to Bring Local Books and Publishers into your Classroom

Conversations around books in schools in Alberta are at an all-time high. In this presentation, the Book Publishers Association of Alberta will provide a window into independent publishing in Canada (specifically in Alberta). We’ll also provide some free and easy-to-use tools to find local content, which will help educators fulfill the requirement of using Canadian books in their classrooms. Some resources we will highlight include: -Read Alberta eBook Collection: A collection of thousands of Alberta-published eBooks made available to anyone with an Alberta library card. -Alberta Books for Schools: A continually updated catalogue and online database that -connect educators with Alberta-published books that are mapped to the Alberta K-12 curriculum. -Read Alberta website: A hub for Alberta’s readers, authors, publishers, booksellers, libraries, and educators to connect, support, and learn more about one another. Participants in this session can expect to walk away with a better understanding of publishers as local businesses, as well as their processes, and major hurdles. They’ll also discover tools they can use to find Canadian books for every student (at every age), regardless of what or how they read.
