Frameworks - Scaffolding Understanding in Math

Friday 6 March 2026·7:40 pm

We develop our Frameworks over the years, through education, exploration, and experience, creating an ever-more complex map of "How Things Work" that lets us be fluent with the ideas and operations we know, and helps us to learn and adapt to the new things we encounter. Frameworks help us become confident, powerful learners ready to take on new challenges. This session will explore a few key Big Ideas of Number and examine how to frame those ideas so Learners can build increasingly complex understandings of Number. We will follow the learner as those initial tools and tactics are leveraged into helping to develop increasingly complex ways of handling numbers, from simply counting and organizing to developing Additive thinking, Multiplicative thinking, and dealing with ever-increasing complexity in the numbers themselves bigger numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers. Session Objectives: 1. Examine how kids learn math through the lens of a Learning Progression of Big Ideas 2. Explore how Visuals and Frameworks can be leveraged to support growth of student understanding.
