Poetry Playtime- Ideas for the Elementary Educator

Thursday 5 March 2026·4:00 pm

Ready to shake up your classroom poetry routine? Join award-winning teacher and poet Kiki May Healey for an inspiring session that proves poetry is for everyone, whether you adore it, avoid it, or aren't sure what to think! Together, you'll dive into poetry as a playful, creative doorway into powerful student writing. Forget the stiff haikus (too tricky) and corny limericks (save those for family weddings). Instead, Kiki will share accessible, year-round strategies that bring poetry to life, helping students tap into their voices and build lasting confidence as writers. Expect to: Discover your own creative spark through approachable activities. See poetry's power as a tool for connection, creativity, and classroom community. Leave with practical ideas you can use right away to make writing joyful and collaborative. This session has heart, humour, and hands-on energy. Come curious and leave inspired and get ready to help your students fall in love with poetry! Session Objectives: 1. General Outcome 2: Students will respond personally and critically to poetry in oral, print and visual media texts. 2. General Outcome 4: Students will explore a variety of ways to enhance clarity and artistry through poetry. 3. General Outcome 1: Students will use poetry to explore feelings and ideas.
