From Scribbles to Purpose: Supporting Emergent Literacy for All Learners (Double Session)

How do we engage students who are just starting to explore letters, words, books, and writing, and help them understand that written text has meaning and purpose? This session explores emergent literacy- the stage before conventional reading and writing instruction- for students with diverse physical, communication, or cognitive needs. A Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist will share theory and practical strategies from the Literacy for All framework, with a focus on learners with complex communication needs, including AAC users. Participants will learn approaches for shared and independent reading and writing, using tools such as alternative pencils and accessible materials. Leave with ready-to-use ideas to help every student, from early mark-making to meaningful participation in literacyâ€, because everyone can learn when given the proper access and support. Session Objectives: 1. Discover what emergent literacy looks like in the classroom and how to recognize students who are just beginning their literacy journey. 2. Explore hands-on strategies and tools that facilitates student participation and engagement in reading and writing.      3.  Learn how to create inclusive literacy experiences using the Literacy for All framework, ensuring all learners of all abilities can grow as readers and writers.
