Lucky Us. Cross-cultural comparisons of luck and misfortune…with an artistic twist.

Myth or reality, verifiable fact or simple belief, coincidence or fate? Throughout the centuries, humans have often attributed their successes and blamed their failures on something ‘other’. We look for guidance in the stars, the cards, or try to make our own luck through offerings and entreaties. In this session we’ll compare a variety of cultures, focusing on the ‘other’ that is deemed lucky or unlucky, helpful or harmful. Participants will leave with ideas on how to authentically engage their students, building bridges not only between cultures, but between art, history, and their specific content areas. Attendees will also create an objet d'art to carry a bit of luck as they go on their way.
