Writing Beyond ELA: Practical Strategies for Integrating Writing Across All Content Areas in Middle Grades
Middle grades students learn best when writing is used as a tool for thinking, not just assessment. This interactive session helps educators in all content areas integrate short, low-stakes writing opportunities that strengthen comprehension, reflection, and disciplinary literacy without adding to grading load. Participants will engage in hands-on experiences such as the Grading-Free Zone, which models quick, sustainable feedback, and the Hidden Writing Hunt, which guides teachers to identify natural points within existing lessons where writing can deepen understanding. Grounded in research by Kelly Gallagher, Graham & Perin, and Applebee & Langer, the session bridges theory and practice to show how brief, authentic writing moments can transform classroom learning. Attendees will leave with practical strategies and fresh ideas for embedding purposeful writing into the routines of middle grades classrooms across subjects.
