Against the Wind

The Against the Wind STEM Challenge engages students in designing a hovering device capable of withstanding simulated hurricane winds, modeled using a plastic tubing wind tunnel and fan, to help Hurricane Hunters develop safer methods for data collection within hurricanes. This hands-on activity aligns with Standard 5.E.1 by fostering understanding of weather data interpretation, pattern comparison, and the influencing factors like the Gulf Stream, as well as analyzing the water cycle driven by solar energy and severe weather phenomena. Through this project, students explore the science behind hurricanes, weather patterns, and the engineering of resilient devices, enhancing their comprehension of atmospheric processes and the importance of innovative solutions in meteorological research.
