Interfering For Your Enjoyment, using diffraction and interference to measure distances

Part of PDTCA 2026
Thursday 19 February 2026·8:00 pm

High school physics students are introduced to the concept of interference of waves in Physics 20 and then shown in some depth how interference patterns can be used as measurement tools in Physics 30. In this hands-on session I will present a set of demonstrations, and participants will try some experiments that illustrate how Physics 30 students can use double and multiple slit interference patterns to measure wavelengths of light and small distances as part of the Physics 30 EMR unit.
