Bridging Coursework and Practice: Developing an Authentic APE Practicum Experience for Preservice Educators
This session explores the creation and implementation of an adapted physical education (APE) practicum experience designed to complement an undergraduate APE course. The practicum provides preservice physical education teachers with structured, hands-on opportunities to work directly with students in both general and adapted physical education settings. Presenters will discuss the rationale for integrating real-world teaching experiences, highlight key challenges and successes encountered during implementation, and share reflections on student growth and program impact. A central focus will be the development of the APE Practicum Handbook, which includes detailed guidance on supervision, lesson planning, assessment, and reflective practice. Attendees will receive practical strategies and resources to support the development of similar practicum experiences at their institutions, with the goal of strengthening APE teacher preparation through meaningful fieldwork.
