Designing Meaningful Assessments That Work: Measuring Skill Development and Health Literacy in Health Education

Wednesday 18 March 2026·10:45 am

As health education transitions from content-based instruction to a skills-based approach, assessment practices must also evolve to keep pace. This session provides educators with practical tools and strategies for designing meaningful assessments that gauge both health skill development and health literacy. Participants will learn how to create performance tasks, checklists, rubrics, and other authentic assessment tools aligned with the SHAPE America National Health Education Standards.

We will explore methods for assessing skills in ways that encourage student reflection and real-life application. Additionally, we will discuss how to implement benchmarks and formative assessments throughout the health literacy journey. Assessments don’t have to be intimidating; they can be valuable teaching tools that inform instruction and evaluate student learning. Attendees will leave with ready-to-use templates, sample assessments, and renewed confidence in measuring what truly matters in health education
