Identity and Inclusion in Youth Sports: Increasing Confidence Through the CROWN Initiative
Have you noticed any barriers that students face in physical education or sports participation related to natural hair or protective hairstyles, particularly among marginalized and underrepresented groups? Embracing natural hair and wearing protective hairstyles plays a vital role in shaping the experiences of youth in sports -- particularly among Black and Brown students. This session will explore barriers including policies and practices that can have an impact on students and how it can negatively impact their self-esteem, confidence, sense of belonging, and willingness to continue participation in sports. This session will also examine the CROWN Initiative, and discuss actionable steps that coaches, teammates, and athletic organizations can take to ensure that all students feel fully included and supported in PE and sports programs. Participants will leave equipped with the knowledge and practical strategies to empower student athletes so they can thrive.
