International Research Symposium on Content Knowledge in Physical Education
This symposium presents evidence from Belgium, Turkey, South Korea, and the United States demonstrating that content knowledge serves as a fundamental cornerstone for effective physical education teaching and learning. Five studies discuss research conducted with physical education students and preservice teachers across multiple content areas, revealing consistent patterns: both common content knowledge (CCK) and specialized content knowledge (SCK) are critical for teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes and should be central to physical education teacher education (PETE) programs across different cultural contexts and educational systems.
Research consistently demonstrated that content knowledge serves as a foundational element for effective physical education teaching (Hastie, 2023; Ward & Kim, 2024). Common content knowledge encompasses the fundamental knowledge teachers need about rules, techniques, tactics, safety, and etiquette within specific movement forms and activities. Studies reveal concerning gaps in preservice teachers' CCK, with typical scores ranging from 50-72% on health-related fitness assessments and below 60% on sport-specific knowledge tests (Ward & Kim, 2024).
Specialized content knowledge includes knowledge of how to represent content to students, understanding of instructional task progressions, and knowledge of common student errors and corrections. Research shows SCK is the weakest element acquired during teacher education and cannot be developed simply through teaching and performance experience—it requires explicit instruction (Chey et al., 2025; Madou et al., 2023; Tsuda et al., 2024; Ward, 2009).
Multiple studies demonstrate that stronger content knowledge positively impacts teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes (Sinelnikov et al., 2016; Ward et al., 2015). Teachers with deeper CCK and SCK can better adapt instruction to student needs, provide more precise feedback, and design appropriate task progressions (Iserbyt et al., 2024). Conversely, weak content knowledge limits teachers' ability to modify tasks and respond effectively to student performance, directly constraining student learning opportunities across diverse physical education contexts (Ayvazo, & Ward, 2011).
This symposium starts with a study in which Turkish researchers validated the Health-Related Fitness CCK test by translating and adapting Santiago and Morrow's (2018) original instrument. The final 32-item test demonstrated excellent validity and reliability using Rasch modeling analysis. Staying in the content domain of health-related fitness, a next study reports on 186 South Korean preservice teachers from nine universities who scored only 45.7% on health-related fitness knowledge tests. This demonstrates inadequate preparation similar to findings in the USA and Latin America, indicating a widespread international problem.
A third study tracked 181 Turkish PETE students' CCK across volleyball, gymnastics, hiking/camping, and dance from program entry to graduation. Only volleyball reached acceptable levels; other activities remained below the 60% threshold. Studies from other countries came to similar conclusions, which poses a substantial challenge for PETE programs.
A Belgian study with 161 secondary students (ages 16-18) found that adding SCK training to CCK improved tutor behavior during reciprocal peer tutoring and learning outcomes at retention.
Finally, researchers from the USA and Türkiye showed that structured content knowledge packets significantly improved 28 preservice teachers' SCK in badminton, particularly in identifying critical elements, creating task progressions, and identifying and correcting performance errors.
