About the Speakers Dr. Elise Brown is the Assistant State Superintendent of Instructional Programs at the Maryland State Department of Education. In this role, she directs the coordination of instructional programs with school leadership, professional learning, and HQIM. Prior to her work with the Maryland State Department of Education, Brown served in the roles of State Digital Learning Coordinator, Director of Online Professional Development, and Professional Development Coordinator at the Mississippi Department of Education. In each role, Brown led teams focused on serving teachers through professional development and coaching to improve student outcomes. In addition to her roles with Maryland and Mississippi, Brown was a secondary mathematics teacher for nine years.Brown holds a PhD and an MEd in Educational Leadership from the University of Mississippi, and a BS in Elementary Education from Mississippi State University. Tenette Smith, Ed.D., is Chief Academic Officer for the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), leading efforts to advance academic excellence and equity for all students. She oversees curriculum development, instructional standards, and initiatives to improve achievement and close opportunity gaps. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Smith previously served as State Literacy Director and Executive Director of Elementary Education and Reading at the Mississippi Department of Education, where she led statewide literacy and early learning initiatives. Her career began as a kindergarten and first-grade teacher, later becoming Director of the Early Childhood Center at Jackson State University(JSU). Dr. Smith earned a B.S. in Elementary Education, M.S. in Educational Administration, and Ed.D. in Early Childhood from JSU.
