Empowering Literacy: Strategies for Multilingual Learners
This 2-hour interactive workshop is designed for educators, school leaders, and support staff committed to enhancing literacy outcomes for English Language Learners (ELLs) and Students of Determination. Directly aligning with the Dubai Education 2033 (E33) Goal of "Equitable and accessible education designed around the wellbeing of diverse learners," this session will provide practical, research-informed strategies. Building on the work of the Multilingual Learning Research Center at University of Wisconsin-Madison, participants will explore the unique challenges and opportunities faced by diverse learners, learn how to leverage linguistic assets through translanguaging and biliteracy, and engage in experiential learning to deepen empathy and build understanding of scaffolding needs. The workshop will model effective instructional strategies, including interactive and collaborative learning, visual supports, and explicit language instruction. Key areas covered include scaffolding for writing, fostering culturally responsive classrooms, promoting wellbeing, and integrating technology. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with actionable strategies to create inclusive and supportive learning environments that empower all learners to achieve literacy success in alignment with Dubai's educational vision.
