Literacy: Strategies for Teaching Arabic Language (presented in Arabic)

This workshop will be conducted in Arabic This workshop is an invitation to educators to rethink what literacy means in Arabic and how to nurture early readers through intentional, research-informed strategies. The first section of the workshop focuses on building a shared understanding of the notion of literacy as it applies specifically to Arabic. Participants will engage in reflective dialogue exploring the unique characteristics of the Arabic language. Together, we will unpack the phonological, morphological and orthographic features that distinguish Arabic from other languages. This exploration aims to encourage educators to thoughtfully adapt approaches that are relevant to the linguistic features of Arabic. Drawing on current research and classroom-based evidence, participants in the second part of the session will be introduced to practical, impactful strategies for teaching reading to early learners. Emphasis will be placed on developing phonological awareness and vocabulary acquisition through authentic and engaging texts. By the end of the workshop, participants will have deepened their understanding of Arabic literacy and acquired a set of adaptable strategies to enhance early reading instruction in their own classrooms. The session promises to blend theory with practice equipping educators to build confident Arabic readers from the earliest stages. Teachers of Arabic as a first and second language interested in early reading acquisition are invited to attend this workshop. Directors and coordinators of Arabic programs are also welcome!
