Equitable Biliteracy and Languaging Practices in Urban Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms (SPONSOR)
When educators allow students to draw on their full linguistic resources while negotiating meaning-making, instructional activities must consider culturally driven materials. Hence, teachers can elevate current Literacy and Language practices for emergent bilinguals. As a result, students’ confidence and content acquisition are highly observable through language. Considering students’ (all) linguistic resources, teachers will erase the misconception that these students have inferior language skills and need remedial classes (Garcia & Kleifgen, 2018). Participants will: + Interact with the presenter and attendees on how to develop literacy and language simultaneously. + Modeled how the use of the schools' curricular texts can and should support language, writing, and reading simultaneously. + Witness how the use of L1 can support the development of L2 using the curricula already in your classroom.
