Great lessons for teaching the Holocaust (Double Session)

In this session participants will go through three different lessons designed to engage students in learning more about the Holocaust. 1) The Sailing of the St. Louis- When a boat of 937 Jews left Hamburg bound for Cuba, none of them could have fathomed the difficulties awaiting them. This lesson is designed to engage students in learning more about the sailing, but also examining the points of view involved in each of the groups involved. Session will include access to resources and summative assessment activity. 2) Identifying and categorizing Perpetrators, Collaborators, Bystanders, and Rescuers. This simple activity will encourage discussion about the roles individuals played in the carrying out of the Holocaust, beyond Hitler. 3) Using the previous lesson, participants will then be tasked with answering the question; "Who Killed Barney Greenman?" For students, 6 million can be absolutely incomprehensible. However, the death of just one child can provide clarity and focus. Using video testimony and the categorizations from lesson 2, participants will engage in group discussion to get to the core of who was responsible for Barney's death. Each of these lessons will provide participants with a way to engage students Monday morning in meaningful learning about the events of the Holocaust. Session Objectives: 1.
