1A: Leading for Network Health: Selecting Tools and Planning Your Improvement Routines

When building an improvement network, where do network leaders focus? How do they know that the network structure is supporting participants? This session will provide participants with an ability to measure network health through both robust, annual tools and nimble, practical measurement. According to the Evidence for Improvement framework, three nested levels of evidence are required to support network development: working theory of improvement, improvement enterprise, and environmental contexts. In practice, most networks focus on the working theory of improvement, ensuring that a system of measures aligned with the theory is in place, while the other two levels of evidence receive comparatively little consideration. This session will start with a case study of successful use of the Network Health Survey that triggered changes to the network structure and eventually meaningful improvements in several areas of the survey. Participants will then examine approaches for measuring the improvement enterprise and environmental contexts, and strategize around application to their own improvement work.
